Bowdoin Men's Volleyball wins pool at Bates In the first match of the day, against University of Maine, Bowdoin came away with a 2-1 victory (21-25, 25-17, 15-8). After a slow start in the first game, Bowdoin came back with authority to defeat U-Maine. The Polar Bears were led by senior captains Henry Brennan (7 aces, 22 assists), Ely Delman (5 aces), and Phil Friedrich (7 kills, 8 digs). The team was also aided by middles Jeff Jeng (8 kills, 5 blocks) and David White (10 kills, 3 blocks). In the second match of the day, against host and conference rival Bates, Bowdoin ended up with a 2-1 loss (13-25, 25-23, 12-15). The Polar Bears came out strong, but after the devastating injury of Phil Friedrich, they dropped the first game. Scrambling, and playing with a brand new lineup, the Polar Bears took the second game thanks to the great come-back serving of sophomore middle Hunain Khaleeli (9 aces on the match). However, it was not enough in the end as the Bobcats triumphed in the third game. Bowdoin was aided by sophomore libero Felix Jaeckel (12 digs), setter David White (6 kills, 16 assists), and first-year middle Jeff Jeng (5 blocks, 8 kills). In their last match of the day, Bowdoin rolled over conference rival Colby with a 2-0 win (25-21, 25-15). The team was aided by strong serving from junior Justin Strasburger (5 aces, 6 kills), Ely Delman, and first-year middle Jeff Jeng. Jeng also had 7 kills and 4 blocks. Bowdoin was also aided by David White (20 assists, 5 kills, 3 blocks) and Henry Brennan (9 kills, 7 digs). These victories, coupled with a key loss of Bates to U-Maine, secured a first place finish for Bowdoin in pool 1. The second half of this tournament is to be held at UNE on February 11th, and Bowdoin will take on USM, Plymouth State, and UNE to determine their ranking for interdivisional play.
