The Bowdoin Organic Garden is a student-run organic garden supplying high-quality, organic produce to the college and the greater Brunswick community. The garden was created in 2004 by a group of Bowdoin students interested in promoting sustainable agriculture and local produce. The garden provides a unique educational opportunity to Bowdoin students, many of whom are unfamiliar with growing food, to learn about the source of produce so often taken for granted, and simply to get to have the inspiring experience of “getting their hands dirty.” The garden has become a bridge to the surrounding community as well. By working with a local land trust, getting support from nearby farmers, and bringing food to the local soup kitchen over the summer, the garden has become integrated with the community at large.
