Activities

Dear International Students and Teaching Fellows from France and Germany:

I hope that you have all survived the first days of classes. After seeing most of you last night at Coate's Ice Cream, it looks to be a fun and exciting year for the I-club. This note is just a reminder to you all that the First Year International Student Orientation will take place tomorrow, September 1. Orientation will began with breakfast at 9:30am in Maine Lounge. At 10am, there will be introductions and a panel discussion lead by some of the returning international students. The panel will address academic issues, such as first year seminars, distribution requirements, and study away, as well as study strategies, research, and academic resources on campus (i.e. Writing Project/E.S.L., Quantitative Skills Center, Baldwin Teaching and Learning Center, Computing Centers). Around 11:30am, the panel discussion will end, and everyone will be allowed to go back and gather beach supplies. We will depart for Old Orchard Beach at 12noon, where we will have lunch and enjoy the beautiful Maine outdoors. After experiencing some real American culture "hanging out at the boardwalk", we will head to the Old Port in Portland. There you can explore the many shops, boutiques, diners, and restaurants. Finally, we will feast on Vietnamese cuisine at Saigon Thinh Thanh, in Portland. We should return to Bowdoin around 7pm.

As an added bonus, four teaching fellows from Germany and France will be joining us for the day. So, first years come out and learn all about being an international student at Bowdoin while enjoying a fun and adventurous day away from campus. I know the returning students can't wait to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow,

Wil Smith
