Hello to all Howard/Howell affiliates,
To those of you who do not know me, my name is Katie Grote and I was a Howard House leader during 1999/2000. I am currently studying away for the year in Berlin, Germany and having a wonderful time (although I do miss all of you).
I have enjoyed watching the Howard/Howell house webpage grow and change since it's creation in the summer of 1999. I signed onto the Howell website today hoping that I could learn what was going on with my social house while I have been away, maybe read about some of the latest events and issues affecting the house, and of course to see pictures of my friends. I was extremely involved in Howard last year, and it is often a surreal feeling to be completely cut off from the day to day business of running a social house. To this end, I must commend the people who have worked on this website-- it looks great and is very informative.
I am concerned, however, when I read the Online Forum. Howard/Howell affiliates have always been a group of very different and often, opinionated, students with different interests and ideas. In many ways, I believe this variety of affiliates contributes to the vitality of Howard House and certainly to the overall vitality of Bowdoin College. However, these same differences can lead to strong arguments that can be destructive and hurtful rather than constructive and helpful for the overall house. I hope and trust that you all can use these arguments within the House to build Howell and the relationships of the people working within it.
I am also interested in learning how this year's and next year's new house leaders are thinking and planning ways to incorporate upper-class affiliates back into the House. I say this only partly our of self-interest: I had many fun times with Howard during my first two years at Bowdoin and would love to continue my involvement in the house. However, since I have been gone for the entire year, I have not even ever been inside the new building that is Howell House. A lot has happenned to Howell since I left last spring, and I know that I am not the only one who needs help catching up on the new people, new activities, new thoughts and ideas, etc.
Thank you for all your hard work to keep Howell House the innovative, exciting, and fun place that it has been throughout its history here at Bowdoin. And special hugs to all my House co-leaders and residents in 1999-2000. You guys rule!
Sincerely,
Katie Grote '02
