I would like to note the distinction between a motto and a slogan. Slogans are used for hype as james notes and fit a "here today - gone tomorrow" role. Mottos are long lasting (the Bowdoin family's motto - ut aquila versus coelum - I think - has been around for hundreds of years) Slogans are ephemeral (e.g. Wesleyan as the "independant ivy")

we don't need to market our house - our events perhaps - Scrabble Saturday at 2:00 PM. An identity would be nice, however. Even in these posts this house has been called "wellness," "howard," and "howell"

Of course a motto alone is not an identity - it's part of one. A tangable part. I have reams of historical documents from howell's past. but this is not an identity either.

well then, what is an identity? A question you can meditate on if you wish. But give Howell its few latin words - lux, veritas, dignitas - perhaps one day we will be worthy of them.
