Hey Howell Leaders! (and Affiliates too)

I've checked sparatically for this site to be up, in an effort to keep myself informed on the low down happening at the house, so I'm really glad to see that the new site is finally fully up and running! Great Job!

I was reading over the minutes to the meeting from Oct 22nd before you guys went on break, and I just have a few thoughts to share. You are certainly free to take them or leave them. I was noticing the suggestions for possibly bringing back Singled Out or Who Wants to be a Thousandaire again, and I really think that it's not a good idea to revive either one of them. Here are my reasons:

1. Why not to bring back Singled Out: It was a very successful event the first time it went on, however, raised mild concern after being put on. Last year, it came close to being pulled off, but was originally questioned by Burgie, and only approved after he believed that there were no problems surrounding the event. If you try to put it on again, first off, I doubt that he will approve the event being held in the union, after the issues that arised last year. Of course, you could have it in another location, but is it in the best interest to the house to host an even that the director of student activites doesn't support (I know he's not Howell, but he does represent some aspect of the campus). Beyond that, there were/are several Howell Affiliates who are angry that Singled Out got canceled in the first place, as well as many who will be angry if we attempt to put on the event again. Obviously, you can't please everyone all the time, and it's even hard to please some people some of the time, but I think that trying to bring back Singled Out would pour salt on a lot of open wounds and cause a lot of house conflict. Perhaps it's better off to leave it in Howell's archives as a past, fun successful event, and not to tamper with that memory.

2. Why not to bring back "Who Wants to be a Thousandaire":
--the hype around the original show is not as big anymore
--there won't be another 5.5.00 planets in allignment type day
--the, "I wonder what this event is, I wonder how they'll pull it off, maybe I'll go and check it out" aspect isn't there anymore
--it's A LOT Of work, even with the computer system remaining, it'd still require coming up with new questions, deciding what values questions should be at, trying to figure out how to give out a decent amount of money without going bankrupt, ask a former question committe member about it. Also, publicity, getting equipment again, getting enough contestants, etc.
--It's yesterday's news. A lot of people were excited about it last year, it was new, it was fresh, it was exciting. It's not any of that if we put it on this year.
--No one won more than $100 last year, if people remember, they may comment, oh, no one's going to win anything this year, the questions are too hard, the questions are unfair, who the heck knows what a chawbacon is? Also, anyone who didn't like the event might spread that it's not worth going to.
--I'm not saying that it couldn't work or that it wouldn't work if put on again, but I think by repeating it, you risk putting in a heck of a lot of work for something that could be a potential disappointment.

3. Why to try something new:
People get excited about new things, it makes them curious, it seems interesting, they come to see. It shows that we have continually new ideas and leaves people wondering, wow, howell just put on another great campus event, I wonder what they'll do next year. Some events such as applepicking, nada cocktails perhaps, and others I'm forgetting can work as good repeat traditional events. however, I think that the more traditional part of this should be that Howell does a game show type thing, but that it'd be a new one each year.

I'm still trying to think of what might be a good idea for this year, something that involves a lot of people. If I come up with something, I'll let you know.

As I said before, my opinion is just my opinion, but I just wanted to give you a little perspective on things. I don't even know how seriously repeating these events are being considered, but there's my two cents, for what it's worth.

I'm still having a blast in Australia, and I'm looking foward to returning to the house next semester!

Best Wishes,
Christine :-)
