Dane brings up a good point. Howard has an image problem as of late. I would venture to say that it has something to do with our status as "chem-free." We are seen by some members of the community as outcasts, synonomous with other outcasts of society as of late: For instance, I've heard that Howard kids have been called homosexual. I've heard members of the Bowdoin community say that we are self-inclusive. We purposely exclude ourselves from the rest of the community. We don't go to their parties, etc. For many, it might have something to do with the fact that some of do not drink and don't like the atmosphere, and the giant campuswides that most houses have might be why some members of Howard don't go. Does that make sense? I think so - but not to the rest of the community.
We definately have an image. For much of the surrounding community that does not know us, it is certainly negative. How can we change this, can we change this? Absolutely. As tough as it may be, there are many activities, social or academic, that are substance free that we can tap into. They can be fun. The trouble is getting our hands onto these ideas and executing them. If done properly, the Bowdoin community may see our image in a positive light. Although it's tough to say what that image may be, it can be controlled by us.
There are many types of people out there. For example there are those out there who complain and criticize, but then do nothing about it. Then there are those who see those criticisms and do something about them. The latter of these two examples will help this image problem - I make a call to anyone out there who will read this. Come aboard the H-Train. We have the potential. Let's reach it.
