Howell House Minutes, Tenth House Meeting, 11/5/00

1. In the Beginning...
A. Owen's Welcome
B. Midweek Recap, Quinn. Did cookies and cream, which I hear went well.
C. Animal Shelter, Stacey. No one went last time because it was too
early, so times could change.
D. IM Games: First games for the winter IM Hockey and Basketball teams
will be starting up this week. Talk to Owen for bastketball and Karen
or Quinn for hockey if you're interested in playing!

2. Pressing Issues
A. Treasurer's Report, Liz: The decision has been made to split house
money between this semester and the spring (for which $3,000 has been
set aside). For this semester, we have $1,980.51 left for use.
B. Programming Stuff: Is a potpourri of treats these days. Here's what
Quinn rattled off:
-the Fall Festival is approaching soon...talk to Jill if you're
interested in helping out
-Friday there will be a "Sound of Music" party here in Howell at 7 pm.
-Saturday, nobody can afford to miss the culmination of Shenique's
efforts in the campus Star Search/Talent Show. Whether you'd rather be
competing or watching, pls come :)
-One program the house is looking at is Adopt-A-Family program with the
Salvation Army, which we would participate in by pooling money to
purchase holiday gifts and a dinner for a needy family. Talk to Quinn
if you would like ti participate and help make someone else's holidays a
bit brighter and more happy.
-A possible holiday bonanza will allow affiliates to get together
and create gifts and cards for friends and family and generate more of
that giving spirit
C. Mellon Grant: Brian is still working on getting one speaker to come
to Howell and expressed interest in an academic aspect to speaker
invitations. Kenn Starr is still a possibility
D. Howell T-Shirts: Liz is still yelling "hello?" to ResLife and has
yet to hear anything about it
E. Ping-Pong Table and other game stuff: The Air Hockey table is on its
way. (Oh, and it's in Massachusetts to anyone who is interested)
F. Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Justin: the new program won't be happening
until next senester. :( Will keep us updated...
G. The Composite, which we want soon: Phil is looking into printing
costs, as we currently want to do the digital thing we did with our
profiles at the beginning of the year. More to come on that later
H. Spring Programming: Singled Out, Thousandaire: The question was what
main one (or two) events we should focus on planning for in the spring.
Thousandaire or a new twist on it...or going for Singled Out...or maybe
doing a new game show and continue to play on that theme by doing a new
game show every year
I. House Camera: Colin Dieck of Hyde has generously offered to give his
camera to the house for use by the Historian and other house members at
special events. Justin threw out the idea of compensation of some kind.
Thank You Colin!
J. House Dinners: Our very first dinner (yeay!) will take place THIS
COMING THURSDAY at 5:30 pm. Come if you've signed up; if not and you're
still interested, today is the last day to be e-mailing Justin if you
want to come. Get psyched because it's going to be great.
K. Dry Erase Board: An idea was having a dry erase board on which people
could keep a calendar of house events along with a space for signup
sheets with the point of condensing all our information into one space.
Programming chairs seemed to want to stick to the traditional way of
doing things
L. House Library Committee: Will consist of Frank, Quinn, Lauren,
Alisia,
and Hannah. There are many different ways we could start collecting
books
so if you have ideas come talk to one of us.
M. House Collage-photos, etc. Emily and Hesper will be working on the
grand project, which should be a lot of fun

3. Other Issues "Not on the Agenda":
-Justin proposed that we allocate $150(+)!! for Howell's Holiday decor
to go all out and decorate the place for Christmas like you've never
seen any place before. It passed with all except 2 who were present.
Some of the stuff on our list: a gigantic tree, pine garlands and
eucalyptus swags, strings of popcorn and cranberries...
-The Howell house website is up and running, so GO SEE, GO SEE!!!!!! The
web address is www.bowdoin.edu/studorgs/howell!!!!!! Special thanks to
Phil Sharp and John Meyers for a job well done.
-Howell House is looking at throwing another Nada Cocktail Party in the
basement on Dec. 1st, as BOCA has agreed to perform if we do.
