Minutes for Sunday, October 8, 2000

I. In the Beginning...
    A. Owen's Welcome
    B. Recap of the last Midweek- Jill's caramel apples were a huge success! Great job!
-Katie and Quinn will be providing the goodies this week on 10/11 (TONIGHT!) Stay tuned for details!
-Owen volunteered to take the midweek on 10/18
    C. Animal Shelter- No trips went out due to parent's weekend.
    D. Intramural Soccer- Howell has a game on Tuesday at 4:15. So far the team is doing extremely well. Everyone is welcome to participate!

II. Pressing Issues
    A. Treasurer's Report: Liz stated that we have $5,983.51. This is minus the trophy, talent show, and Tenley's midweek.
    B. Programming Activities
-Liz is in charge of planning a "Scary Story" event the night of Friday, the 13th. Scary movies will follow immediately afterward. If you have any story ideas or want to see a particular movie, email Liz (erobinso@bowdoin.edu).
-Jane Amero, who is currently the Maine State Senate Minority Leader and now running as a Congressional candidate, is coming Tues. at 7 pm.
-During Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 20-22), Howell will be sponsoring a face-painting booth at the kids' fair. We need volunteers, so be thinking about helping out!
-As a reminder: if you would like to plan an event and need assistance, contact any of our programming chairs!
    C. Irrelevant Games- Owen has decided to postpone them indefinitely.
    D. Initiation- Stacy and Justin M. are planning to have a dinner after the house dedication on Oct. 21st when we can eat together and have the first-years sign the book. Please spread the word and if anyone has ideas, email sbarron or jminihan.
    E. Mellon Grant Committee- Ali and Colin L. attended the meeting last week on what to do with the $70,000. Money will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis for social house activities such as guest speakers and field trips.
    F. Composite- Brian checked with Res Life about having a composite done with Howell House Leaders' Pictures. The cost would be somewhere around $500. After hearing this figure, we decided to make the composite ourselves. Colin L. and Phil agreed to discuss the details after the meeting.
    G. Big Brother/Big Sister- Justin M. sent out an email to interested parties saying that the after-school program is still in the planning stages. The Bears and Cubs program, that meets every other Sunday in Sargent Gym, needs three males and one female to help out, though.
    H. Orient Article- There was a debate about whether or not Howell House should pass a resolution of censure against the Orient for violating the values of the learning community as stated in the "Interim Report of the Commission on Residential Life" with some seemingly offensive articles published. It was decided that individuals, not our house as an institution, should express concern since the articles didn't pertain specifically to Howell House. An additional point was made that this might be an issue for Student Congress to deal with, not the houses.
    I. House Ownership Committee- Phil and Colin D. agreed to serve. This committee deals with issues like storage concerns and painting walls.

III. Open Forum
    A. Bowdoin Bubble: We need a representative for the Bowdoin Bubble, BCN's version of Survivor, this Saturday. Colin L. agreed to take on the challenge and will hopefully come back with a win (not to mention a great prize!)
    B. Pumpkin Carving- Nick is sponsoring a pumpkin carving contest for Hyde residents in the near future. Hydians will come over to carve their masterpieces and then all affiliates will be able to vote for their favorite. Stay tuned for more details.

IV. The World's Only 1.5 Minute Trivia Game (with prizes)
To conclude the meeting, we had an exciting battle of the brains. If you want a mental challenge (or just know a lot of random facts) stick around and you could be a winner! Next house meeting will be Sunday Oct. 15 @ 8 pm in Howell. See you there!
