On Saturday, April 2nd, 2005 , Bowdoin Hillel and the Office of Alumni Relations, held a ceremony to dedicate Bowdoin's new acquisition of a torah. The acquisition was facilitated by Joel B. Sherman '61 from Congregation Agudas Achim in Malden, Massachusetts , when that synagogue merged with another congregation. Since then Bowdoin Hillel has also acquired an arc and mantel for the Torah. In addition to being used at services and to cultivate Jewish education and study on campus, the torah stands as a symbol of permanence for Bowdoin's growing Jewish community. This event evidenced the thriving spiritual and social Jewish community that Bowdoin Hillel is and continues to become.
