Mission - We hope to assist the Tedford
Shelter in their goal of providing services and shelter
to those of the community in need. Through working alongside
and serving other members of the community, the program
also allows Bowdoin students the chance to contribute to
the town of Brunswick. In this way, the shelter not only
gains needed volunteers, but Bowdoin students gain further
understanding of the community.
Volunteer Experience - Volunteers
spend about two hours a night preparing dinner, serving dinner,
answering the door, washing dishes, and accepting donations
at the singles shelter. A good deal of time is also spent
socializing with staff, guests, and other volunteers at the
shelter. On some occasions, students visit the shelter to
help with maintenance or yard work. Some students also visit
the family shelter to work with children who are staying there.
Membership - about 15 active members.
History - The Tedford Shelter has been serving
mid-coast Maine since the late 1980’s. Bowdoin students
have been involved in different capacities throughout the
years. More recently, students at Bowdoin have become organized
to ensure that there is at least one student-volunteer at
the shelter every night.
The Tedford Shelter is located at 49 Cumberland Street in
downtown Brunswick.
