Mission - PHA is committed to providing
students with the skills and confidence needed to reach
their fullest potential and thrive in their academic environment.
While doing this we hope to form relationships with the
students to advise and serve as mentors.
Volunteer Experience - Bowdoin
students head to Portland Monday through Thursday from 5 to
8pm. Kennedy Park Center is a state funded after-school educational
center that provides a space for our activates. The majority
of the students are refugees from Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia.Unlike
most tutoring programs at Bowdoin mentors have the opportunity
to work with many students on different subjects. Majority
of the students are ESL (English as a second language) students.
PH A is a great way to learn about the students' personal
struggles and their struggles as ESL students while helping
them build confidence, and helping them overcome language
and cultural barriers. The experience of our volunteers is
greatly enhanced by regular attendance. Attending regularly
will enable you to develop close relationships with many of
the students and hopefully enrich your experience. 22-24 Bowdoin
Students volunteer regularly during the week.
Membership - 24 active members
History - The PHA Tutoring volunteer program
started when Bowdoin graduate Tay Chung encouraged members
of the Bowdoin Asian Student Association to volunteer at the
Kennedy Park Study Center (the tutoring program’s home)
while he acted as the center’s director from 1996-1998.
The program opened up to the college in general in 1998 as
student interest increased, and grew significantly with encouragement
from study center director Sandy Wright from 1999-2002. Now
under the direction of Jonathan Roberts and Yirgalen Madie,
the study center sees over twenty Bowdoin student volunteers
each week! In addition to offering help with homework, PHA
volunteers have held fundraisers for school supplies and hosted
Kennedy Park students at certain Bowdoin events. We look forward
to growing more in the future!
