Mission - Bear Buddies brings Bowdoin
students together with children who have special needs (physical
or mental disabilities) and their families. By organizing
activities for children with special needs, Bear Buddies
hopes to encourage them to try new things and interact with
others. We welcome "typically developing" siblings
in order to support their relationships with their special
needs siblings and give them a chance to befriend children
who grow up in similar circumstances. Bowdoin students involved
in Bear Buddies are dedicated to helping children with special
needs while building relations with the greater community.
Volunteer Experience - This
program runs every other Sunday afternoon from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.
The meetings usually take place on campus, but we occasionally
plan events in town. A wide variety of activities are planned
each semester, including holiday parties, art projects, bowling,
and swimming. While experience with children or adults with
special needs is useful, it is not required. Volunteers are
welcome to join at any point during the semester.
Membership - Approximately ten to fifeteen
Bowdoin students are actively involved in Bear Buddies.
History - Bear Buddies was founded by two
Bowdoin sisters and their friends in 2000.
