Elle Logan, of Boothbay, Maine, and sophomore at Stanford University, won a Gold Medal in the United States Womens Eight at the Beijing Olympics. While she was home after the Olympics and before returning to Stanford, she met with the Bowdoin Crew to talk about her olympic journey and about balancing academics and athletics. She described the race in Beijing as the perfect race for us and accompanied the video of the race with commentary. As for school and sport, she said, Its a huge challenge and balancing act. Then she joked, If you have any tips for me, let me know! The crew was honored by her visit, as she had just returned from an appearance on Oprah, at The Republican Convention, and throwing out the first ball at Fenway Park. Fall Fun!
Posted October 19, 2009
The Head of The Charles topped a fall of fun racing for the Bowdoin Navy. At the fall classic in Boston, Bowdoin's men finished 9th in the College Four and the women came 13th. Both crews had their best rows of the season on the blustery Charles and earned guaranteed entries for next year. Three alumni entries proved the strength and passion for rowing that marks Bowdoin Rowing. In the Alumni Eight, our men finished 19th among some giants of the sport. In the Club Four the Polar Rowing club placed 22 nd in a huge field and earned
a guaranteed entry for the 2nd year in a row. And on Sunday in the Champ Four, our Polar men came 11th in a national caliber fleet.
So in spite of the weather, it was a great weekend that capped a great fall.
At the New Hampshire Championships the weekend before the Charles, the Navy mined medals in several events. Our 2 men's pairs took gold and bronze, the Novice Women earned a silver and the Novice Men doubled with silver in both the eight and four. The Novice four claimed a bronze at the Textile as well.
Alll this racing fun bodes well for a speedy spring, and underscores the club's motto, "Have Fun and Go Fast!" Row U Bears!
