  • Student Museum and Arts Collective (SMAC)

The Student Museum and Arts Collective is a group created by and for students who are interested in the art world. More specifically, we aim to expose students to art related opportunities that they would not necessarily encounter on campus. The Collective aims to create interdisciplinary connections between individual students, the museum, and the professional art world. Our goal is to have members from all different parts of campus with different experiences. Through such diversity, we hope to create a forum in which students can explore and gain new perspectives on art and how they can continue to do so after Bowdoin. As of right now, there is no outlet on campus for students to learn about professional art opportunities. SMAC would be an appropriate remedy to this. Through co-sponsorship with the CPC, we hope to plan and host the “Career Conversations” events. They are currently not well attended and SMAC’s involvement would help boost participation. After surveying attendees, we have found that younger graduates in more entry-level positions seem to be more appealing. Such a change and SMAC’s involvement would help make these forums more accessible and relevant to Bowdoin students. Other ideas include cosponsoring events with HerCampus to increase both their and our visibility. We hope to curate an exhibition in the Zuckert Seminar room focusing on Bowdoin’s female artists. In addition, we would like to reach out to parents and alumni to utilize their experiences in the practice of art collecting. This would establish a professional networking opportunity that would benefit students interested in going into the art world. In addition to alumni networking opportunities, we would like to utilize the unique space the Bowdoin College Museum of Art has to offer to educate students about art world offerings. Activities such as planning student exhibition open houses and Thursday late-night events would expose students to the Special Events side of museum workings, an aspect many are not aware of and that can appeal a multitude of disciplines. We would additionally offer behind-the-scenes access to other departments in the museum such as education, development, administration, marketing and communications, web design, publications, archives/art library, and curatorial via V.I.P access to the permanent collection, planning sessions with curators, meetings with the registrar, exposure to advertising strategies, etc. To involve the entire campus community in such opportunities, we hope to create a newsletter or a blog that document our endeavors as well as work with other events to cosponsor events.
