The Bowdoin Film Society (BFS) screens contemporary, independent, foreign, and classic films each week on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 PM in Smith Auditorium of Sills Hall. All showings are free of charge.

Society meetings are on Sundays at 7:00 PM in the Smith Union Lounge. We casually discuss recent movies that we have seen and decide what movies we want to screen the next semester.

We conduct two annual events: we rent out the Eveningstar Cinema (a local indie movie theater) for Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff, and we hold an Academy Awards party.

If you are interested in joining us, just come to a meeting. You can also email Brendan Mortimer or William Donahoe for more information.

What Sort of Films We Show

Each semester, we try to show:

  • A foreign film (or two)
  • A documentary (even if it means that only five people will be there)
  • A classic (or two)
  • A (good) summer blockbuster
  • Something controversial
  • Something that didn't get the attention it deserved
  • An independent film (or three)

Movies We Will Never Show

Armageddon, Big Daddy, Corky Romano, Judge Dredd, Men in Black I or II, and Starship Troopers. And anything with Colin Farrell or Keanu Reeves. Tom Cruise is on warning...but we do so love him in Top Gun.

Waste of Celluloid

From Justin to Kelly, You Got Served, Kazaam, Gigli (or any Bennifer film), Hercules in New York (with the Governator), and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
